Gene flow and reproductive success in ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) in the face of ash dieback: restoration and conservation

چکیده
Abstract • Key message Ash dieback decreases individual reproductive success of ash trees leaving healthy overrepresented as seed and pollen parents for next-generation seedlings. Substantial gene flow over hundreds meters combined with superior fertility creates optimism the species’ future in European forests. Context Hymenoscyphus fraxineus is causing high mortality ( Fraxinus excelsior L.). Due to inheritable resistance pathogen, natural selection likely act favour improved forests following regeneration. Still, frequency low, effect will depend on survival, dispersal capacity under conditions. Aims We aim test whether contribute more next generation infer their potential dispersing progenies across forested landscape. Methods Using parentage modelling, we estimate mating parameters distances seeds compare realised that unhealthy ones. Results Healthy are randomly sampled seedlings forest, although pronounced female side. observe long events mean 67 m 347 m, respectively. Conclusion Variation results lowered susceptibility dieback. The large risk genetic bottlenecks inbreeding allows resistant disperse genes into neighbourhoods substantial sizes.

Gene flow of common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) in a fragmented landscape
Gene flow dynamics of common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is affected by several human activities in Central Europe, including habitat fragmentation, agroforestry expansion, controlled and uncontrolled transfer of reproductive material, and a recently introduced emerging infectious disease, ash dieback, caused by Hymenoscyphus fraxineus. Habitat fragmentation may alter genetic connectivity and e...
متن کاملMolecular markers for tolerance of European ash (Fraxinus excelsior) to dieback disease identified using Associative Transcriptomics
Tree disease epidemics are a global problem, impacting food security, biodiversity and national economies. The potential for conservation and breeding in trees is hampered by complex genomes and long lifecycles, with most species lacking genomic resources. The European Ash tree Fraxinus excelsior is being devastated by the fungal pathogen Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, which causes ash dieback diseas...
متن کاملGenetic Characterization of Common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) populations in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Background and Purpose: Common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is a species with a widespread distribution in Europe. It mostly grows on mesophyll sites, mainly in karst valleys and by forest creeks, and in Herzegovina at northern expositions and higher altitudes with somewhat better types of soil. Materials and Methods: We studied 10 natural populations. We collected dormant buds with branches fro...
متن کاملCryopreservation of dormant European ash (Fraxinus excelsior) orthodox seeds.
We investigated the sensitivity of dormant Polish-provenance Fraxinus excelsior L. seeds to extreme desiccation and liquid nitrogen (LN, -196 degrees C). Germination and seedling emergence tests revealed that the critical water content (WC) of the desiccated seeds was 0.04-0.06 g H(2)O g(-1) dry mass, g g(-1) (0.04 g g(-1) in the germination test and 0.06 g g(-1) in the seedling emergence test)...
متن کاملChloroplast DNA variation and postglacial recolonization of common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) in Europe.
We used chloroplast polymerase chain reaction-restriction-fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and chloroplast microsatellites to assess the structure of genetic variation and postglacial history across the entire natural range of the common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.), a broad-leaved wind-pollinated and wind-dispersed European forest tree. A low level of polymorphism was observed, with only...
